The most important financial and business area of Bangkok. Stretching from the river fanning north-east from Taksin (Sathorn) bridge along Silom, Surawong and and Sathorn Rd, the area contains a mix of older European, Chinese and Indian influences, modern high rise buildings, restaurants, shopping arcades, department stores, and entertainment areas like Patpong. Along the river, the area contains some of the best and most prestigious
hotels in Bangkok. Famous names like the
The Oriental Hotel, consistently voted on the world's "Best Hotel"
lists,
The Shangri-La, the
Sheraton Royal Orchid and across the river, the
Peninsula.
Reflecting Thailand's early modern history, the riverside also contains some older, European style buildings. Although never colonized, Thailand granted land along the river and some of the architecture reflects that historical era. Around the back of the Oriental Hotel (originally built in 1876) is the Venetian styled Dutch East Asiatic Company (EAC) founded in 1897, the French Embassy, The Old Customs House (1880) and the Portuguese Chancellery. Travelling away from the river along the busy roads of Silom and Surawongse, you'll find the gleaming glass towers with Thailand's top companies, banks and trade headquarters served by local shops, restaurants and an area of antique shops. Towards Lumpini Park is the Patpong area - famous for its raunchy go go bars and party atmosphere, this small enclave has expanded from the original Patpong Road to a cluster of several small streets, including Soi Thaniya (popular Japanese hostess bars) and the "dance and trance" party zone at Soi 2. Sathorn road which runs parallel to Silom is mainly business oriented
with new company headquarters located here.
